[Shouto goes quiet. He's been brought up to practice it at home- but out of respect for Aizawa's house he definitely didn't want to try in his house. His fire is... not at all as in control as it should have been at this age. At least in his father's eyes.]

That's what I hear.

I don't want to damage your apartment.

[dryeyes]

I'm grateful for that. [His apartment is small and shitty enough as it is, thanks.]

... if you were interested, we could arrange a time and place for you to use it. [A brief pause, as their food arrives, briefly nodding at the waitress's politeness.] Your quirk, that is.

[There was still a part of him that felt it was unwise to mention it. After all, the rigorous "training" of Shouto's quirk was detailed heavily in the court documents. It was abuse. Still, if he wanted to be a hero, if he was willing to work hard to become a hero, to get into UA regardless of what lower-level school he started with...]

[He was a teacher. He could make it work.]

Shouto takes the moment to chew on his bottom lip as he picks up his chopsticks. He needs to perfect his ice, even if he doesn't feel comfortable using his fire yet.

There's no hero who doesn't have control over their quirk.]

... Where would it be?

I could ask the principal about using the U.A. campus. [Since, after all, it was several years before a bunch of break-ins by shitty villains would make them heighten security even more.]

... otherwise, there are plenty of other places. Any place that's somewhat isolated and with no risk of environmental damage would do.

[His supervision would be key, of course.]

The campus is probably good. It's got places for students to work on their quirks, right?

[Also he wouldn't be in public. He'd like to keep avoiding the public eye as long as he can manage.]

That's right. There are a few specialized arenas outside of the campus but for now we'll stick to the basics. I have confidence you'll be able to see the rest when the time comes.

[In other words, he's certain Shouto is capable of getting into U.A. himself. If anything, Endeavor did create a child with a powerful quirk. Everything else he did was a lot more questionable and disgusting.]

We'll balance training your quirk with whatever schoolwork you have. I'm sure I'll get grumbled at if your grades were to suffer or something like that. [Since he... is currently Shouto's legal guardian. Even though it would be understandable to have ones grades drop in this situation. Try explaining that to the nagging legal team, though.]

I'd rather be somewhere less exposed.

[Because he's still "Endeavor's son" to most people, and hearing his name is- well, it's something he'd much rather avoid. He can't do it forever, but it's still far too soon for him to hear it.

Hopefully he can get over it. He hopes he can.]

[The media were vultures, too. If they saw that quirk being used anywhere, people would talk. Outside, he'd probably have to limit him to using the ice. Indoor he could manage whatever.]

If they do, we'll stop until they recover, simple as that. [He was technically a teacher and a legal guardian right now.]

How is your control, currently? [... of his quirk, not his grade.]

How is your control of your quirk? They've advised against heavy use of your quirk, considering the incident. [Emotional instability could affect quirks in unusual ways. Still, not using them at all only amplified the idea of trauma.]

Have you tried it at all since then?

My ice control is good.

[When he gets a little too bored at home and runs out of things to do.

He can make hand toast too, but he'd rather just use a toaster.]

[Hand toast is a little more risky. Please don't tell him about hand toast until it's perfected. Don't tell him about making hand toast in his house.]

How about the other side?

[It sounds harsh and clinical but there were signs of the caution and care underneath. He didn't even say the word "fire." The fact Shouto didn't mention it at all implies it's bad. Still, he needed the direct assessment. He needs to be able to assess himself and convey that assessment.]

[One day he'll show Aizawa his hand toast, but only when he's sure he'll get a "good job".]

[There are no positive emotions tied toward the fire side of himself.]

[He suspected as much. He holds that silence a moment, letting a breath out while scratching the back of his neck.]

So, you can't control it?

[Since that was the question he asked, after all. A quirk that couldn't be used was just a liability.]

[There's a pause, but... he nods.

Shouto can keep it off, but that's not really control while using it. Aizawa's his temporary guardian. He should be honest.]

[dryeyes]

If you can't use both sides, you're under-utilizing your quirk. [Blunt, to the point.]

A villain coming at you will be working with 100% of their potential. To survive, you may have to use 100% as well. That should be your goal, in order to be accepted to U.A.

[It sounds like an ultimatum but Shouto had years before he'd take the U.A. admissions exam. It was more a statement of an inevitable truth. Eventually, he would need to approach it. The rate could vary. The end goal couldn't.]

[Shouto's gaze drops down to the table. Logically he knows Aizawa is right, but emotionally he can't come to terms with using fire just yet.

Two years. He has two years until he needs to take the exam for U.A.

It would be easier if his quirk was just ice, but no. Here he is. Stuck with ice and fire.]

[dryeyes]

[A careful look tells him that, despite the silence, his words have had an impact. They can simply eat, then. He doesn't need to press it right now.]

[... so, nom nom meal he didn't have to cook. Hell yeah. The waitress comes back a few times. She seems torn between the fact Aizawa looks nice in his suit and the fact his face doesn't match the neat appearance. A few glares matched with polite comments earns them their privacy.]

[Although, seemingly at random, Aizawa taps the rim of Shouto's glass of water.]

Hey. Freeze it.

[Shouto definitely does notice the waitress who seems like she want to talk to Aizawa. It's kind of weird, honestly. Usually people don't try to talk to him when he's out like this.

Is it the suit? He doesn't get it.

But when he's asked to freeze the water, he does. Aizawa told him to, so it's probably fine, despite them being out in public.]

[dryeyes]

[An adult told him to, he'll take responsibility.]

[Aizawa pulls back the glass, holding it up to his eyes to judge how completely it was frozen. After a few seconds of thoughtful contemplation, he turns the glass upside-down. No water even slips out of a crack.]

Didn't freeze my hand, completely solid... not bad, for your age. [he sets it back down.]

[glaciers]

[ He looks at the glass of water, he really hopes Aizawa doesn't expect him to thaw it out right now. ]

I worked really hard. [ When he was living with Endeavor, he had to. If he wouldn't use his fire, then he'd perfect his ice. ]

[dryeyes]

[He only has to defrost it if he wants to drink his water. Aizawa will set it back down then take a sip from his own glass.]

What do you think of, when you use it? For you, is it a muscle contraction, an image in your mind, or is it as natural as breathing?

[ He can make himself some ice to suck on. The water can be a casualty of this dinner.

Honestly he can't remember the last time he had to think about it. Already, he's had years of training. Even if he's neglected one side. ]

It's instinct.

So, natural, then. [That was certainly easier than people out there who were wildly incompatible with their quirks. He was at least at peace with his ice.]

[However, that would make dealing with his fire side another issue entirely. They were clearly broken down into a dichotomy in his brain. Controlling the ice was natural but the fire would be a different story, even though they should be activating through the same biological processes.]

[This was the sort of thing they called quirk counselors in for, wasn't it. Still, he never liked their type. He'd call if Shouto was still failing to make progress closer to the U.A. deadline.]

[... or, well, he'd make a note in the paperwork. For whoever was caring for him, then. It didn't feel real, to imagine this child still living with him in two years.]

We'll save any experimentation with that other side for when there's a fire extinguisher nearby. [he could erase the quirk but that didn't stop anything that had already caught fire]

[Fire is just as natural as breathing. The problem: Shouto wants nothing to do with that side. The flames reminded him too much of his father, the way his mother flinched away from fire. How she hated that half of him.

Now he's suppressing his left side, unwilling to use it.]

Are there a lot of them in UA?

[He'd rather not set something on fire that wasn't supposed to be.]
